What is Jojoba Oil?

Within the last several years, jojoba oil has leapfrogged to the front of the line when it comes to its cosmetic uses and the relevance to the skincare industry in general. So, what is it, exactly? The answer might surprise you!

Where does jojoba oil come from?

The jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) plant is a desert species of plant that primarily thrives in the southeastern United States and northern Mexico regions. This is not a cactus, but rather a woody-stemmed shrub that produces silvery-green foliage. When it blooms, the delicate flower clusters mature into hazelnut-like seedpods that contain the “oil”, which is then pressed and extracted for a variety of uses.

What makes jojoba oil so special?

What we think of as “jojoba oil” is actually a golden liquid wax that is contained in each of the pods1. The waxy esters that make up this liquid gold are the closest bio-identical substance found in nature that mimics our skin’s own natural sebum, or skin oil2. While other oils like sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, and olive oil are also somewhat suitable for our skin, jojoba oil is far and away the most compatible carrier to nourish human skin3.

Jojoba oil contains very high levels of vitamin E, vitamin B-complex, copper, and zinc, as well as antibacterial and antioxidant properties4, making it an incredible restorative compound that truly nourishes, stimulates, and rebuilds our skin from within.

And while other oils may go rancid over time as they oxidize, jojoba oil is remarkably stable5 and will still be just as potent today as the day it was pressed.

How can I use jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil is hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic6 (won’t clog pores), making it ideal for all ages. Since it is a naturally lightweight oil, it can be used pretty much anywhere you need extra moisture, and a little goes a long way!

Some of its many uses include: moisturizing dry skin, sunburn aftercare, makeup removal, nail and cuticle care, skin recovery, and hair health7.
